'Barbarism is the natural state of mankind,' the borderer said, still staring somberly at the Cimmerian. 'Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph.'

Tool Trunk Thursday: Spiked Pauldrons

Welcome back to another installment of Tool Trunk Thursday!  I hope everyone is doing well during the pandemic.  Remember to consider that everyone out there is experiencing and expressing their frustrations and change in life their own way.  Let us try and give everyone a little leeway.

Nothing says fantasy armor like spiky bits.  When I came across this icon I immediately wanted to include it in the Tool Trunk, but I wasn't sure how.  It certainly doesn't make armor more effective, and an argument could be made for it to be less effective.  I gave it some thought and asked myself, "why do people wear this, or like to pretend to wear this?".  My answer was it looks cool.  It looks mean, and so I had my answer.

These spikes are either riveted to the armor after it is built, or in some cases they are built right into the armor at the time of it's construction.  Their materials vary from steel, to wood to bone and everything in between.  No matter what they are made of they all serve the same purpose, to make the wearer look bigger and meaner and give someone pause before attacking.

Tool Trunk Thursday: Stygian Beans

Another Thursday and more equipment is shoved into the tool trunk! Today's piece of equipment comes from the dark anbd mysterious lands of Stygian. This works perfectly with the launch of Conan the Adventurer, the sourcebook detailing Stygia and the Black Kingdoms.

Stygian Beans

These beans have been cultivated in Stygia since time immemorial. The shrubs they come from are picked of their bright red berries, and then the seeds are dried and roasted in great clay ovens. Finally the now dark beans are ground and hot water is poured over them. At this point the Stygian beverage is ready to be consumed.

It is said that those that wield magic prize this concoction for it's mind altering and restorative effects. If you liked this article then don't forget to subscribe to get the next exciting installment on pulp gaming both Sci-Fi and Fantasy!

Tool Trunk Thursday: Leg Trap

Dog brothers, Sword sisters the minor cataclysm continues its relentless attack against humanity. Even if our physical world is not changed, that which we hold in our hearts and minds, surely will be. I hope everyone is doing well and being as creative as they can be in this time of strife. Stay strong. Stay Healthy. Keep it Weird.

Leg Trap

The ability to hunt animals in a passive way when foraging for food, allowing the hunter to attend to other things can mean the difference between life and death in the harsh wilderness of the Hyborian Age. These traps can be used to set up a trap line and gather food while a shelter is being built, or fire made.

These are simple devices that can be found across the world in various forms. The consist of a pressure plate and two spring loaded jaws that close violently around the leg of anything unlucky enough to step into their deadly grip.

An alternate use for these devices is to provide a level of security around a camp at night acting as a way to slow unwanted guests and alert the camp. Generally these devices require a D2 observation test to see, but this might be more difficult if the players take the time to disguise it. If someone is unlucky enough to step into one of these they suffer 3cd, Vicious 1, Grapple 3 damage. Tool Trunk Thursday: Portable Toolbox

The frigid snows of the north continue to assault the stronghold, but I believe the worst is done now. Surely the winter storms are over and the mental benefits of more sun and warmer weather are felt soon. But I know you are not here to listen to me ramble about the weather. So without further introduction.

Portable Toolbox

All manners of craftsmen in the Hyborian Age are called upon to make repairs away from their shops. These kits are employed by such artisans and consist of basic tools such as hammers, punches, saws, files, etc. Anyone with a modicum of skill can benefit from having a selection of tools at their disposal. Adventurers who are planning to be away from civilization for an extended period of time would do well to take a selection of tools to help with the maintenance of their equipment. Tool Trunk Thursday: Rune Sword

Dog Brothers and Sword Sisters, welcome to another installment of Tool Trunk Thursday! We are 3 weeks into our self imposed isolation to slow the stem of the COVID-19 virus. One of the great things about the Hyborian Age is that we can see the monsters that need slaying, although sometimes maybe our heroes might need a keen edge to do it....

Rune Sword

Before the Hyborian Kingdoms spreads across the world in the west, before the mighty kingdoms of the east, before even Stygia there were people that dwelled in these lands. Their mark upon the world is largely erased by war and cataclysm. Still, some places hold glimmers of those long forgotten kingdoms and times, ancient ruins or tombs untouched by the shifting lands. Some of these even hold rare artifacts like this, an ancient sword forged by some unearthly metal. It's edge remains sharp even after the centuries; it's balance is unlike that of the swords of the Hyborian age.

Warriors using such a weapon gain an advantage in combat over their foes, how could they not?

Tool Trunk Thursday: Ground Crystal

Welcome to another Tool Trunk Thursday! As I write this I am half way through week 2 of working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have also been crazy busy transferring my in house John Carter game onto Roll 20 so we can continue our adventures on Barsoom. Thinking today was Wednesday I didn't realize I needed to post today's piece of equipment until now, at least it is not Friday like last week!? I hope everyone is doing well and is safe. Stay Strong. Raise your sword against the storm.

Ground Crystal

Similar to the blinding sand implemented by the alchemists of the Hyborian Age, this represents a cruder, less "magical" option. Cheaper and more plentiful than hiring an alchemist to craft a blinding powder this ground dust renders an opponent temporarily unable to defend themselves.

This is certainly not going to make you look like a wizard, but hopefully your opponent dies quickly after this, so who cares?

Tool Trunk Thursday: Healing Injections

TOOL TRUNK.....Friday? The world is a little crazy at the moment, and while things here are fine, it has apparently screwed with my schedule more than normal. I have more time, but the days have begun to run together with no actual commute to work. Either way I present to you the new piece of kit for your Conan 2d20 game!

Healing Injections

Those brave enough to drink the concoction of an alchemist know that they can be an effective treatment to many ailments. Some of the crazier alchemists have devised ways to get their mixtures into people in a quicker, less voluntary way. Those who seek to help have developed serums that allow the injured and the weak to be rejuvenated through the injection of some mysterious substance found in the Black Kingdoms.

Tool Trunk Thursday: Arcane Tome

Thursday has come again, as it always does. And much like the inevitability of the changing days, the Tool Trunk grows ever fuller. Sword sisters and dog brothers! Open the chest and take what you may need!

Arcane Tome

Since man could write, or perhaps since man was plagued by the curiosity of the Outer Dark, there have been tomes of arcane knowledge. These books hold the secrets of men and demons. The words, images and rituals held with these pages are ones of great power. The horrors, both physical and mental, shown on these pages are enough to drive the most stalwart wizard insane.

Tool Trunk Thursday: Map

BY CROM it is Thursday again already! That means there should be another piece in the Tool Trunk! Let's take a peek and see what new item as been added

Map

Maps of the places of man have existed as long as people have been able to make pictures. We have attempted to put order to our world, describe how its parts relate to each other. These maps guided new people to places they had never been before or made note of a place of interest to those who cared; trade routes, fertile soil, buried treasure or ancient places of worship.

The accuracy of these maps varies from time to time and place to place. Often men drew these maps from stories told by travelers, or even just took wild guesses to finish their work. Whether they are to be trusted is left to the care of those who currently possess the knowledge.

Tool Trunk Thursday: Sextant

Welcome Dog Brothers and Sword Sisters to the next installment of Tool Trunk Thursday! The feature where I present a piece of equipment for Conan 2d20 and its effects in a friendly card-shaped format.

WHAT!? Thursdays seem to come back around faster and faster, but this time it failed its stealth roll. Today I present a piece of equipment that many might think to be out of place, and indeed I think this item will be exceedingly rare, and only among the most advanced of the sea going countries.

Sextant

It is not known where these devices originated, but many believe they came out of Stygia, and the infernal sorcerers that dwell there. Either those learned men know more about the sky than others, or some demon from the outer-dark gave the knowledge to them for some reason known only to it. Its origins remain shrouded in mystery, but the use of the device is unmistakable.

These rare and coveted devices have allowed the boldest captains, both pirate and otherwise the ability to sail like never before. Leaving the sight of land and exploring new areas and routes. Captains are most certainly willing to kill to obtain one, or die to protect one they have. Tool Trunk Thursday: Skeleton Key

Welcome Dog Brothers and Sword Sisters to the next installment of Tool Trunk Thursday! The feature where I present a piece of equipment for Conan 2d20 and its effects in a friendly card-shaped format.

Another Thursday! I almost forgot about this feature in favor of work on another article! Have no fear Brothers & Sisters the chest grows EVER fuller!

You can find other pieces of equipment in the Blog's Equipment Chest!

Skeleton Key

Those who gather riches or arcane knowledge seek to lock those secret away from prying eyes, and fingers. As those hordes grow, so do the number of locks. Some wish to maintain their security, but grow lazy with the tedious chore of remembering which key opens which locks. The laziest of these forgo some of their security with the creation of a skeleton key. This single key allows them to open many or all of the locks within their vast vaults of knowledge and gold. Over time these keys sometimes become separated from the estate of those that created them, and the locks that they open.

These keys are capable of opening a large number of similar locks. They are rare, expensive and uncommon. From time to time such a key may fall into the hands of the characters. When this happens, which specific lock it opens is less important than for it to open a key lock for the players that will be of narrative importance to the story. Needle & Thread

From creating items of cloth to mending them, cloth and sewing represent a large outlay of work for the people of the Hyborian Age. Still the tool that does the job of joining cloth is the humble needle, made from all kinds of metal, bone or wood. A common tool, but one that is often not found in your adventurers tool-kit. Tool Trunk Thursday: Portable Anvil

Welcome Dog Brothers and Sword Sisters to the next installment of Tool Trunk Thursday! The feature where I present a piece of equipment for Conan 2d20 and its effects in a friendly card-shaped format.

The new year is upon us and as some of us think about heading back to work, and getting back into more normal routines I wanted to wish everyone a great new year!

You can find other pieces of equipment in the Blog's Equipment Chest!

Portable Anvil

Forming metal requires hammers and a surface to work on. Whether it is silver, gold or steel this is unchanged. The smiths of the Hyborian Age know this and from time to time require a smaller version of the anvils you might find in their shops. These pieces of steel are instrumental to field repairs to armor and weapons. Do not let their name fool you though, they may be portable, but they are not light.

Tool Trunk Thursday: Hatchet and Sickle

WOW! It seems that last Thursday came and went without me noticing! Do not worry though, because today I am putting out TWO pieces of equiupment for your CONAN 2d20 Game! The Hatchet and the Sickle!

You can find other pieces of equipment in the Blog's Equipment Chest!

Sickle

These small hand held tools serve one purpose in the Hyborian Age. They allow the user to more efficiently harvest plants. From grain to herbs many cultures utilize these or similar to enhance their production of wild and domestic plants. Across the globe these can be found crafted in everything from steel to bone.

Hatchet

Much like the sickle this small hand tool is common place in the Hyborian Age. It's larger cousin, the axe, is used to fell huge trees and enemies, but the hatchet is often picked up when small trees need to be cut down to make camp, or wood needs to be broken down into firewood to keep it's owner warm on those cold nights. LIke the sickle above they are formed from everything from stone to steel, depending on the cultures creating them. Tool Trunk Thursday: Fishing Net

Fishing Net

The oceans of the world then, just as now, provide a source of food and survival for those that live along its shores. Many methods are used to gather the bounty of the sea. One of the most common tools used by the men of the Hyborian Age is the fishing net. Common in the countries of Zingara, Argos, Shem, Stygia, Turan and even some of the people of the Black Kingdoms; really any nation that shares a border with the sea.

A strong mesh of heavy rope that can be thrown by several men out into the ocean or another body of water and brought back in, hopefully, full of fish, but who knows what else it might dredge up from the depths?

Tool Trunk Thursday: Sharpening Stone

Welcome Dog Brothers and Sword Sisters to the next installment of Tool Trunk Thursday! The feature where I present a piece of equipment for Conan 2d20 and its effects in a friendly card-shaped format.

The new year is upon us and as some of us think about heading back to work, and getting back into more normal routines I wanted to wish everyone a great new year!

You can find other pieces of equipment in the Blog's Equipment Chest!

Sharpening Stone

Since man has been using weapons he has used other tools to keep them in working order. Weapons of steel are no different, and in time their edges dull and they require maintenance. These hard, fine grit stones from the mountains of Aquilonia and Nemedia, are prized for their ability to bring back the sharpness that a warrior trusts his blades to have.

Tool Trunk Thursday: Holly Berries

Welcome Dog Brothers and Sword Sisters to the next installment of Tool Trunk Thursday! The feature where I present a piece of equipment for Conan 2d20 and its effects in a friendly card-shaped format. I thought I would add a slightly more festive item this week, I hope you enjoy it. You can find other pieces of equipment in the Blog's Equipment Chest!

Holly Berries

Within the temperate forests of the Hyborian Age grows bright green holly. The leaves, though prickly, are harmless but the bright red berries these plants produce are not. If eaten the berries can cause intestinal issues and vomiting. If distilled into a potion by a herbalist these easy to find plants can be used to weaken or perhaps kill a man... if you can get him to drink it.

Welcome Dog Brothers and Sword Sisters to the next installment of Tool Trunk Thursday! The feature where I present a piece of equipment for Conan 2d20 and its effects in a friendly card-shaped format. You can find other pieces of equipment in the Blog's Equipment Chest!

Stygian Sand

In the deepest Stygian deserts lie patches of fine off-color sand. Of those that know about it, some say it is the dust remains of the ancient sorcerers that once walked within Acheron, while others believe it to be where beings from beyond the outer dark once walked.

What can be certain about this sand is that it is a fine powder and that on contact it burns with an intensity of fire. Alchemists lucky enough to possess it are able to more effectively create powders than burn and blind those who would cross them.

Star Flower

These bright orange to red flowers grow most commonly in the darkest parts of the forest between Argos and Zingara. Even within this forest they are rare. It is possible similar flowers may grow in other places in the world, but no matter where they are found they will favor dark old growth forests.

The compounds in these flowers are extremely combustible, and so they are highly prized by the alchemists of the age to create spectacular effects both visually and deadly.

Iron Cauldron

Cauldrons made from iron are used by many different people for many different things. Anyone who needs to heat liquid over a fire in the Hyborian age is sure to have used a similar device. No matter the size, these pots are generally made from thick iron, making them heavy.

They are used widely by alchemists to more evenly distribute heat into their delicate solutions. This allows them to more efficiently use ingredients to create their enchantments.
